Application Window Monitor

The Application Window Monitor allows you to monitor the existence of a visible window on the desktop. A good example of where you would use this is if you had a program that had to be running at all times, but did not run as a service. This could also be used to monitor a problemtic application, perhaps the application shuts down on it's own occasionally, the application window monitor could be used to monitor the problematic application and restart it or notify the appropriate person when it went down.

Add a new Application Monitor Add a new application monitor to the console by selecting File -> new -> monitor -> application

Configure an Application Monitor The name of the window caption should be entered into the first field exactly as it appears in the application. For example, when you open notepad.exe, the windows caption is 'Untitled - Notepad'. If you wanted to monitor that notepad was running, you would enter 'Untitled - Notepad' in the first field. If you wanted to monitor that a file called robots.txt was always open, you would enter the 'robots.txt - Notepad' in the Windows caption field and you would enter the path to the file, for example, c:\robots.txt in the field below that one.

You can add the monitor to the root or select an alternate container from the drop down list.

What is the difference between the Application monitor and the Process monitor?

The application monitor looks for a window caption, a process monitor looks for the existence of a running process that you specify.
